Dog Travel
Dogs and cats must be at least eight (8) weeks old
for travel.
Dogs may need a copy of a health certificate signed by a
licensed veterinarian stating that the animal is healthy enough to
travel by air and is free of injury and disease. Dogs over 1 year of
age are only required to have certification of a rabies vaccination.
Dogs must be on a leash at all times when in public.
For dogs over 35 pounds, there is a "shelf" which
is just a few inches off the floor, in the back of the plane where your
dog can sit or lay. Dogs less than 35 pounds can be carried on
your lap and no kennel is required. Cats and dogs are the only
types of pets accepted for travel on American Airlines. Continental
Airlines has a specific pet travel vans for temperature controlled
transport when changing planes. All Snub-nosed dogs and cats will not be
accepted when the current or forecasted temperature is above 75 degrees
Fahrenheit at any location on the itinerary.
According to the
American Veterinary Medical
Association, in most cases cats and dogs should not be given sedatives
or tranquilizers prior to flying. We highly recommend a seat belt
restraint for all dogs traveling in cars. Large dogs must be properly
restrained with a leash, harness or similar device. Pets also receive
welcome packs including Virgin Atlantic logo T-shirts for dogs, a catnip
mouse for cats and even a Virgin baseball cap for ferrets. Very old or
very young cats and dogs may find traveling too stressful.
Traveling, backpacking, cruising, camping, hiking
with dogs is fun.
Fido Friendly, a Travel magazine for dogs provide
another great resource for pet friendly hotels. Although pets may
travel freely throughout the United States as long as they have proper
documentation, Hawaii requires a 30- or 120-day quarantine for all dogs
and cats.
