The wonderful GREAT DANE- Woof

If you are thinking of adding a Great Dane to your family you must read and research before you make that big decision. The Great Dane is the biggest, sweetest, most lovable and loving dog you will ever meet. However they are big and any loose objects at tail level are goners. If you let the Dane in the bed or on the couch it is free game for the life of the dog. Speaking of life, the life span of the Great Dane is on average 8 years, much less than most dog breeds. The Great Dane is also susceptible to arthritis at an early age along with other more serious medical conditions. They are very sociable and will not thrive without the company of their people.

PLEASE NOTE:

Great Danes are strictly IN-DOOR dogs. I cannot emphasize that enough, the coat of the Great Dane is very thin and they do not have the  undercoat that most dog breeds have to protect from cold and other weather.

*This website does not condone the clipping of ears. It is an unnecessary painful procedure done for looks only. Unclipped ears are becoming more accepted in dog shows and competitions as well.  So if you do get a puppy Great Dane please do not clip the ears, They are much more cute all natural anyway.

BASIC ATTRIBUTES

Attitude to other dogs- Average- with an owner committed to socialization they can do well with all types of animals.

Quietness-Average - The bark is loud however they usually bark for a reason, like a weird noise outside.

Destructiveness- Poor- The size of the Great Dane makes for spills, breaking or knocking on the floor of many objects. They are also notorious diggers, huge holes in a short periods of time.

Protective Behavior- Good- The Great Dane loves their people and will protect them if they sense danger.

Not Likely to Stray-Average - Great Danes are for the most part home bodies, however on occasion they will escape to satisfy their very curious nature. At minimum a 6 ft. high fence around the yard is a must. It is highly recommended to microchip your Great Dane family member.

Good With Children- Good- They are gentle and kind, however they are unaware of how big they are so you must watch them with very small children.

Ease of Training- Average - Owners need considerable commitment to socialization and leash training. Things they do as puppies like jump up are not as minor once the Dane reaches full size.
