| The Great Dane is a wonderful Breed for many reasons however
training is paramount. The training of a Dane Pup can be challenging and
tricky. It takes a dedicated, very committed owner to prepare your Great
Dane Puppy for a happy life as a significant member of the family.
There are many books, videos, and classes dedicated to training these gentle giants. However it is important to research the available methods of training before you commit to one. Some dog training classes are not appropriate for the very sensitive Great Dane. Some Training methods are outdated, ineffective or mismatched for this very special Breed. Any Pet Owner can become frustrated if multiple non-effective methods of training are attempted and fail. I will reiterate it is important to do research, read several books and speak to the trainer about their experience and success with the Great Dane Breed. It is important to be aware that the Great Dane can be somewhat active and needs a period of exercise each day to stay fit. This large Breed is a great house dog. Remember Dane Puppies can be clumsy, but adults are surefooted, graceful and seldom knock things over just by walking around. Most things are knocked over by the wag of the happy tail. Great Danes like children but are unaware of their size and may be too much of a challenge for toddlers who are unsteady on their feet. Although the breed is generally gentle with people, some Danes can be dominant unless taught with a firm hand and some can be aggressive to other dogs and small critters. Obedience training is a must. An energetic 130-pound dog that towers over a preschool child and can easily rest his head on the dinner table must have some manners. Training must be gentle; leash-jerking and harsh discipline may make the sensitive Dane distrustful and edgy. Above all, the Great Dane is a people-dog. He needs space to accommodate his long legs and large body, but he likes nothing better than to spend time with his people. So have fun but be diligent and persistent in training and preparing your Great Dane Puppy for a joyful life with you, as a member of the family.
